The effect of ash softening temperature on heating efficiency

Strict technical procedures have been developed and implemented to assess the properties of solid fuels: moisture, ash content, gross and net calorific values, and chemical substance content. These allow detailed analysis of their physical and chemical composition, providing the basis for efficient and safe combustion.

Although calorific value, moisture content and ash content are widely recognised as key parameters for assessing pellet quality, there are also less well-known but equally important criteria that affect combustion.

These include the deformation temperature, at which the material begins to change from a solid into a plastic mass, as well as the ash melting and flow temperatures.

Ash deformation – a little-known but crucial factor

As a by-product of solid fuel combustion, ash is important when assessing fuel quality. It is waste produced by burning any solid fuel. Ash content is an important fuel quality parameter, and its quantity is essential for determining combustion efficiency.

Solid fuels, including pellets, contain mineral substances as well as organic matter. The presence of alkali metals, chlorine and sulphur in the material being burned can lead to harmful deposits and high-temperature corrosion on heating surfaces inside the boiler.

In the international standard EN Plus A1, which governs pellet quality, ash melting, softening and flow temperatures are recognised as key indicators affecting combustion efficiency. Ash softening temperature is one of the most important parameters because it affects the temperature at which ash becomes fluid. According to the standard, it should be no lower than 1100 degrees C, although not all pellets available on the market meet this condition.

And here we are proud to announce that Feniks Pellets offers much more when it comes to quality!

According to regular tests carried out by Sieć Badawcza Łukasiewicz – Poznański Instytut Technologiczny, Feniks Pellets – in both Premium and Gold versions – also exceeds the stringent standards in this respect.

The ash deformation temperature of Feniks Pellets is more than 35% higher than the requirements set for pellet manufacturers, providing further evidence of its unquestionably exceptional quality.

What does this show?

Why is a higher ash softening temperature so important? In practice, it is desirable for several reasons. Firstly, it allows more efficient combustion, eliminating the need to clean the combustion chamber frequently. Secondly, a higher ash softening temperature indicates the highest-quality raw materials used to make the pellets and a more advanced production process.

Choosing pellets with a higher ash softening temperature affects both combustion efficiency and boiler performance. Pellet producers offering products with ash softening temperatures above the required standards usually supply more advanced, precisely manufactured products, which translates into better heating system performance. These are exactly the products that leave our production line. This is Feniks Pellets.

In light of these facts, it becomes clear why leading boiler manufacturers recommend Feniks Pellets as a biofuel of the highest quality for safe use in their appliances.

It is worth remembering that, alongside calorific value and moisture, ash deformation temperature is an important indicator of pellet quality. A higher temperature not only guarantees efficient combustion but also shows that we have chosen a top-quality pellet.

As we can see, the heating process, which seems simple at first glance, has many interesting aspects that greatly affect how well it works. When choosing fuel for your heating system, it is therefore worth considering all the parameters so you can enjoy warmth along with efficient, environmentally friendly heating.

As an experienced Polish producer that has spent many years exploring the intricacies of biofuel production, we will gladly share the knowledge that allows us to create Feniks Pellets, a premium product, that we are proud of.
