The versatile uses of pellets

Wood pellets are more than an environmentally friendly fuel for home heating. Their versatility means they are used in many areas of everyday life and industry. From outdoor cooking to innovative solutions in maritime transport — here is how wood pellets are making the world more sustainable

Cooking and outdoor appliances

Wood pellets are valued by barbecue and wood-fired pizza enthusiasts. Thanks to quick ignition and minimal ash, pellets allow the ideal temperature to be reached in around 10 minutes, giving food a distinctive smoky flavour.

Pellet patio heaters also provide an efficient, environmentally friendly source of outdoor heat, outperforming traditional gas or electric heating in terms of efficiency.

Industrial and commercial uses

In industry, wood pellets serve as a cleaner, more economical alternative to coal and natural gas in industrial boilers. They are widely used in manufacturing, food processing, the paper industry and large heating systems.

Pellets are also used in biomass power stations and gasification plants to generate electricity, supporting the transition to renewable energy sources with lower emissions than fossil fuels.

Wood pellets are also used as a raw material in the production of composite wood products, such as chipboard and fibreboard, helping to recycle wood waste and promote sustainability in the wood industry.

Animal bedding and absorbents

Thanks to their high absorbency, low dust content, biodegradability and odour control, wood pellets are ideal as cat litter and horse bedding. They expand when wet, providing a comfortable, environmentally friendly bedding material.

Wastewater treatment

Thanks to their absorbent properties, wood pellets can be used in wastewater treatment to absorb untreated sludge and liquids, supporting environmental management.

Innovations in maritime transport

In May 2024, the Japanese company NYK Line, together with NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and the British company Drax Group, signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the world’s first biomass-powered ship — a so-called „bioship”.

The planned vessel will use wood pellet gasification to produce gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, which will then drive a generator powering the vessel. This technology has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 22% compared with traditional fossil fuels.

This project forms part of Japan’s efforts to move towards low-emission, renewable energy sources and represents a step towards decarbonising maritime transport.

Summary

Wood pellets are a versatile material with applications in many areas of life and industry. From home heating and outdoor cooking to innovative maritime transport solutions — their use contributes to sustainable development and environmental protection.
