We would like to share a true story with you, one of many told to us by leading boiler manufacturers. We hope that reading about this case will help you understand the relationship between the price and quality of the biofuel we produce, as well as the relationship between quality and the potential cost of damage to your boiler.
The mystery of the colourful pellets
The example below is a case described to us by a representative of a heating boiler manufacturer, Mr Justyn Nowakowski, Sales Director of Windhager Polska. His account shows how important pellet quality is and how it affects our comfort and safety.
Windhager is a pioneer in the pellet boiler market. Its innovative approach has led to the development of automatic pellet boilers, a pneumatic pellet feeding system and a zero-emission pellet gasification boiler. All of this reflects concern for the natural environment, which, as for Feniks Pellets, is a priority for the company.
The story we would like to share with you took place a few years ago, when a customer of a boiler manufacturer bought pellets labelled on the bags as „Enplus A1 certified pellets”. Initially, there were no problems. However, after around six months, the worried customer called the service team to report a fault with the boiler, which was leaking water.

The situation surprised and puzzled the service staff at the Polish branch of the renowned manufacturer, because, as leaders in the pellet boiler market, they had considerable experience and had not previously heard of such cases. The technicians who arrived on site could not hide their astonishment.

The heat exchanger and parts of the burner were covered in deposits resembling stalagmites.

Even stainless steel components had corroded. Interestingly, material containing pellets of different colours was found in the pellet hopper, attracting the technicians’ close attention.

However, the customer had no receipt or other document confirming the purchase of these pellets, which made the matter even harder to resolve. Windhager decided to replace the customer’s appliance with a new one immediately and took action without delay. This ensured the customer could continue to maintain thermal comfort and heat their rooms.
A fuel sample taken on the day of the breakdown was tested at a laboratory in Brussels.
It turned out that pellet quality was the cause of all these problems!
The chlorine content was found to be as much as 15 times higher than permitted by the applicable standards. To make matters worse, further analysis showed that the coloured granules in the pellets were probably a mixture of plastics.
